But here's what most people don't know:
Every time your dog scratches, licks, or bites at their skin — the barrier gets weaker.
Scratching creates microscopic tears. Licking introduces bacteria. Biting strips natural oils. And with every cycle, the barrier becomes more compromised — letting more irritants in, which causes more itching, which causes more scratching, which causes more damage.
This is what's known as the itch cycle.
And here's the critical part:
Itch medications interrupt the signal. They don't repair the barrier.
So while your dog isn't scratching (because the signal is blocked), the barrier continues to deteriorate. Allergens continue to flood in through the damaged gaps. Inflammation continues to build underneath the surface.
Until eventually — the barrier is so compromised that even blocking the signal isn't enough to stop the scratching.
That's not medication failure. That's the natural progression of an untreated root cause.
